Mass transportation Italy-Medjugorje

Collegamenti Italia-Medjugorje e viceversa.
Information provided AS-IS, no responsibility.

No public transportation is available in Bosnia Erzegovina (buses, coaches, trains, ferries).
The services listed below are offered by private companies, so prices and availability are subject to market demand, not to necessity.

Ferry lines

Split/Spalato (Croatia) - Ancona and viceversa.
They run more frequently in the summer (mid June to mid September).
Sea conditions are calmer in the summer. Get asleep while in the port if sea conditions are bad, to prevent sea-sickness.
Cabin cost is acceptable compared to hotel (and travel time saved). Restaurant is not too expensive.
Transfer time is 5 hours during day-time runs (Snav) and from about 21 to 7 for night-time runs (Jadrolinija).
Car +€100.

Two ferry companies are available:

  • Snav (more expensive, more frequent) about €100 (€70 if booked in advance), runs every day in the summer, leaves Split at 17 and arrives 22 in Ancona; viceversa is 11-15:45: http://www.snav.it
  • Jadrolinija about €50 transfer only, runs 3 times/week in the summer (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays to Italy and Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to Croatia):  http://www.jadrolinija.hr

Connecting in Italy: Trains

From Ancona requires at least one change heading to major cities, travelling North-South and up to 3-4 if travelling East-West.
Timetable, costs and reservations from Trenitalia (National public train system): http://trenitalia.com/
Fast trains cost €50-100 for medium-long distances. Advance booking can cut costs by 50%.

Connecting in Bosnia: Coach

Three runs are available every day, at the same time, from Medjugorje to Split and viceversa.
Transfer time is 3.5 hours for 150 km.
Timetable: http://www.mladifest.com/medjugorje/obvestila/bus.htm

Connecting in Bosnia: taxi

Taxi is also an option for the low cost of life.

Coach Medjugorje-Trieste and viceversa

Trains for Trieste have similar problems as Ancona (above), so from most center and southern Italy it is much faster to cut by ferry and avoid driving many kilometers.
Coaches leave every day both ways at 17 and arrive at 8 the next day:

Flights

From major search engines like

in Bosnia only Sarajevo is available.
1 or 2 stops and minimum 6 hours are necessary for most Italian destinations.
In high season, few days in advance tickets can be purchased for €350-500.
Mostar would be the closest airport but it is not listed (mostly charter flights): http://www.mostar-airport.ba
Flights from BH Airlines from Sarajevo are directly connected to Kopenhaghen and Zurich only, among few others: http://www.bhairlines.ba/english/

A direct (1 hour) Rome (Fiumicino) FCO - Split SPU flight is available from Croatia Airlines.
Cost is only €250-350.
Lower cost with advance booking and if you have some flexibility.
Single way and multi city possible.

Car rental

Hertz and other major companies not available in or nearby Medjugorje.
In Ancona, minimum rental for 1 day with drop-off in other location is €500+.

Hitch-hiking

Not a possibility to exclude considering the high number of travellers, particularly from Italy.

Car sharing

May be a great opportunity to save money (considering the high cost of gas) for offerers and to compensate the lack of mass transportation for demanders.
